Mississippi measure would allow detained persons to sue prisons and transgender inmates - The Hard News Daily

A bill before Mississippi lawmakers could allow detained persons to sue jails and prisons if they encounter convicts of the opposite gender, such as transgender individuals, in restrooms or changing areas.

The idea passed out of a House committee Thursday. It would compel inmate restrooms, changing rooms, and sleeping quarters in correctional facilities to be allocated for use by only one gender. According to the plan, convicts who encounter someone of the opposite sex in any of those areas may sue the institution.

Correctional facilities in the state are already sex-segregated, and Republican Rep. Gene Newman, the bill’s sponsor, could not provide an example of a Mississippi facility requiring a prisoner to share space with someone of the opposite gender. Instead, Newman stated that he introduced the bill in response to persons in other regions of the country receiving accommodations based on their gender identity.

“It gives the inmate a course of action,” Newman explained. “Just watching what’s going on around the country, I mean, you have girls’ sports. You have men claiming to be ladies just to win. It will happen in prison. Men should not be with women. Period.”

The law defines “sex” as “a person’s biological sex, either male or female, as observed or clinically verified at birth.” It has no terminology about intersex people, who are born with physical characteristics that do not fit into traditional male or female categories.

According to Newman, the Alliance for Defending Freedom, a Christian law group, contributed to the bill’s drafting.

Mississippi Rep. Gene Newman, R-Pearl, speaks at the Mississippi Capitol in Jackson, Mississippi, on February 15, 2024. State lawmakers advanced a Newman-sponsored bill out of a House committee Thursday, February 22, that would require inmate restrooms, changing rooms, and sleeping quarters in correctional facilities to be designated for use only by members of one sex. If a prisoner encounters someone of the opposite sex in any of those areas, they may sue the facility.

A brochure provided to lawmakers, which Newman claims was written by the firm, cites a California statute that mandates the state to house transgender convicts in prisons depending on their gender identity, but only if there are no “management or security concerns.”

Transgender inmates are frequently incarcerated according to their sex assigned at birth. Advocates have warned that housing transgender women in male-only facilities can be deadly.

According to a study on California law provided by the state’s Office of the Inspector General, 382 persons have requested gender-based transfers by December 2022.

The state held hearings on 55 out of 382 requests, granting 36 and refusing 19. According to the report, none of the hearings during that time period involved incarcerated inmates asking a transfer from a women’s prison to a men’s prison.

The Mississippi measure was filed as part of a broader movement in conservative states to ban transgender athletes, gender-affirming care, and drag shows. This year, Republican lawmakers are exploring a fresh set of proposals that would limit medical care for transgender children and, in some cases, adults. This marks a return to the subject a year after a slew of high-profile proposals entered law, sparking challenges.

In 2023, Newman proposed a law in Mississippi that prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from receiving gender-affirming hormones or surgery.

The newest bill introduced by Newman is awaiting review by the full House.

BENGALURU: ISRO said that the Plasma Analyser Package for Aditya (PAPA) payload on the Aditya-L1 satellite has effectively identified the influence of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) on solar wind, including occurrences that took place on Feb 10-11.
PAPA is equipped with two sensors: the Solar Wind Electron Energy Probe (SWEEP) for measuring electrons and the Solar Wind Ion Composition Analyser (SWICAR) for measuring ions. Both sensors are capable of determining the direction from which solar wind particles are arriving.
The sensors have been functioning since December 12, capturing spectra indicating the prevalence of protons and alpha particles as anticipated. An interruption in the spectra occurred during Aditya-L1’s halo orbit insertion on Jan 6 due to a temporary change in payload orientation.
On December 15, there was a sudden rise in particle counts, which aligns with variations in solar wind observed at the L1 point by DSCOVR and ACE satellites, suggesting the discovery of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) event.
Additional CME hits were seen on February 10-11, showing slight discrepancies in electron and ion count fluctuations consistent with several mild occurrences.
The findings demonstrate PAPA’s capability in monitoring space weather and analyzing solar events by identifying changes in solar wind composition. Aditya-L1 can offer vital real-time data on conditions at the L1 point through continuous observations by the highly sensitive SWEEP and SWICAR sensors.
The PAPA instrument was created by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) of ISRO for the purpose of investigating the Sun’s coronal heating mechanisms and solar transients as part of the Aditya-L1 mission. ISRO’s success showcases its expertise in indigenous technology.

Can Akaay, the son of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli, become a British citizen? – The Hard News Daily

The couple Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma welcomed their second kid, Akaay, on February 15, according to recent announcements. Many people were curious as to whether Akaay would be a British citizen or keep his Indian citizenship after his birth in a London hospital, which prompted conversations concerning his citizenship.

According to Sports Tak, Akaay is not immediately a British citizen, contrary to expectations. Being born in the United Kingdom does not confer citizenship by default, according to the regulations. Either parent must be a citizen of the United Kingdom or have settled status as a result of long-term residency for the child to be eligible. Similarly, a parent’s citizenship status determines whether a child born outside the UK to British parents can also acquire British citizenship.

Even though Akaay was born in London and both of his parents own property there, he does not qualify for British citizenship. Although Akaay will hold a passport from the United Kingdom, his citizenship status as an Indian citizen will remain unchanged.
In 2017, Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli were married in a religious ceremony. They had their first kid, a girl named Vamika, in January of 2021, and another son, a boy named Akaay, in 2024.

According to ANI, a group of monks were presented with the sacred relics of Lord Buddha by the National Museum in the nation’s capital.

During his remarks, Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar emphasized that the current journey of the sacred Buddha relics to Thailand will serve to deepen the bond between the two nations. It is with great honor that I travel to Thailand to spread the teachings of the Buddha. Humanity was the center of Lord Buddha’s existence. We are witnessing the transfer of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha to Thailand today. The relationship between India and Thailand would be strengthened, according to Rajendra Arlekar.

This sacred cargo, which is held in high regard by Buddhists all around the globe, is scheduled to be transported on February 22 by a dedicated aircraft of the Indian Air Force. ‘State Guest’ status will allow the artifacts to enter Thailand in the morning of the same day, according to news agency PTI, quoting ministers.

Thai Ambassador Pattarat Hongtong expressed her gratitude to the Indian government for granting simultaneous exhibitions of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha, Arahata Sariputra, and Arahata Maudgalayana to Thailand.

I am incredibly thankful to the Indian government for granting simultaneous exhibitions of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha, Arahata Sariputra, and Arahata Maudgalayana to Thailand. For me and the members of the Thai embassy in Delhi, being a part of today’s event is a very remarkable and auspicious occasion. Vamshhi Krrishna knocks 6 sixes in an over for Andhra in C K Nayudu trophy, imitating Yuvraj Singh

In the Col. CK Nayudu trophy match against Railways on Wednesday, February 21, Andhra batter Vamshhi Krrishna followed in Yuvraj Singh’s footsteps by hitting six sixes in one over.

While destroying Stuart Broad in the first Twenty20 World Cup in 2007 on his way to a fifty off of just 12 balls, Yuvraj became one of the few hitters in cricket history to accomplish the feat. Following in the all-rounder’s footsteps, Krrishna bowled Railways spinner Damandeep Singh to death with some exquisite hitting.

Watch as the Andhra batsman unleashes a barrage of vicious strikes on Wednesday in a video that will be posted on the BCCI domestic X account.

After a flawless sweep, Krrishna unleashed three straight powerful strokes.

When the Railways leg-spinner saw Krrishna hit another sweep ball for six, he realized he was out of options. As a way to celebrate his last ball, the Andhra batsman swung his bat towards his teammates in the locker room. He then hit a back foot pull shot.

What happened in the match between Railways and Andhra Pradesh?

After the first innings, Railways had the lead, but the match eventually ended in a tie. In their opening innings, Railways scored 865 runs, with hundreds from Ansh Yadav (268) and Ravi Singh (258), as well as a century from Anchit Yadav (133).

Krrishna responded by showcasing his skills with six sixes and scoring 110 runs off of 64 balls at a strike-rate of over 171. Nine fours and ten sixes made up his innings. Still, Andhra lost the match after being bowled out for 378 runs.

Elon Musk Announces Retirement of All-X Calls, Texts, and the Everything App on Twitter - The Hard News Daily

On a recent Friday in February, Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla and owner of X (previously known as Twitter), declared his plan to abandon his phone number in favor of exclusively using the social media platform X for text, audio, and video communications.

This move is seen as Musk’s effort to promote the enhanced communication features of X. The introduction of audio and video calling capabilities to the platform took place in October of the previous year.

Musk has since been a vocal proponent of transforming X into a comprehensive “everything app.”

Musk shared on his X profile, “In a few months, my phone number will be deactivated, and I’ll switch to using X exclusively for messaging and audio/video calls.”

It’s worth noting that the platform unveiled its audio and video calling features in an early version last year, initially available to a select user base. The capability for direct audio and video calls within the app was broadened to include Android users just a month ago.

In mid-January, the company began deploying call functionality updates, which were made accessible to Android phone users.

A significant highlight is the zero-cost nature of audio and video call support on X for all users who have installed the latest version of the app, eliminating the need for an X premium membership to utilize these call features.

Following the rollout for iOS users in October 2023, Android users received access to this feature the subsequent month.

The functionality mirrors that on iOS, where making calls requires an X Premium subscription, but receiving calls is available to all users, regardless of subscription status.

Following the acquisition of the platform, Musk unveiled his vision to morph “Twitter” into a universal “everything app,” supporting posts up to 25,000 characters.

With the rebranding of Twitter to X, Musk also rechristened the content aggregation tool TweetDeck to XPro.

He announced this change on July 28, mentioning, “Name is changing to XPro. Will come with a wide range of psy-op plugins,” through a post on the platform.
