London:

According to a story that was published in the media on Tuesday, as a result of concerns over the escalation of tensions involving Yemen’s Houthi rebels, the British oil giant Shell has temporarily halted its transit through the main maritime route that goes through the Red Sea.

The United States and the United Kingdom carried out strikes on a large number of locations in rebel-held Yemen on Friday, according to the Wall Street Journal. These strikes were carried out as a form of revenge for operations carried out by the Houthis in the Red Sea, which have caused disruptions to shipping.

The Houthis have been focusing their attacks on vessels that they believe are connected to Israel. On Friday, however, they deemed the interests of the United States and the United Kingdom to be “legitimate targets.”

An American destroyer was the target of a Houthi cruise missile that was intercepted by United States forces on Sunday. On Monday, another Houthi missile struck a cargo ship that was owned by the United States and was located in the Gulf of Oman.

According to a story published by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, Shell made the decision to cease transit last week after taking into consideration concerns that a successful strike may result in a significant spill and put the safety of ship crews in jeopardy.

When AFP attempted to get a statement from the corporation, they declined to comment on the topic.

It was also stated by the Journal that in December, a tanker that was chartered by Shell was harassed by Houthi boats and targeted by a drone that was operating in the Red Sea.

Following the announcement made by British oil company BP in December that it will stop transporting oil across the Red Sea, the oil major has made its decision.

In addition, the shipping giant Maersk said at the beginning of the month that it would be rerouting vessels across Africa rather than using the Red Sea and the Suez Canal for the foreseeable future.

In the meantime, the Prime Minister of Qatar warned that strikes on Yemen have the potential to make the problem even more severe. He stated that tensions in the region would have an impact on exports of liquefied natural gas.

Under normal circumstances, around twelve percent of the world’s trade travels via the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, which serves as the gateway to the Red Sea between southwest Yemen and Djibouti. However, as a result of the attacks by the rebels, a significant amount of shipping has been rerouted thousands of miles (kilometers) around Africa.

Three Million British Citizens Living Abroad Regain Their Voting Right through Elections Act of 2022 - The Hard News Daily

January 16 (THND) in London: The Elections Act of 2022 has restored the voting rights of more than 3 million British residents, including Indians residing overseas, to participate in general and referendum elections in the United Kingdom.

This is the largest expansion of the voting population in Britain since women gained full voting rights in 1928.

There is no longer an arbitrary 15-year limit on voting privileges as of Tuesday, January 16. No matter how long a British person has been abroad, they can still register to vote online.

The last address at which they resided or were registered to vote in the UK will be associated with this.

Once registered, they will be kept on the voter registration list for a maximum of three years. Online applications for postal or proxy votes are also available to electors after registration.

Conservatives Abroad, an international network of members and supporters of the British Conservative Party, spearheaded the “Votes for Life” campaign, which culminated in the enactment.

A long-standing promise of the Conservative Manifesto is the ‘Votes for Life’ campaign.

Despite efforts to thwart the plans by the Liberal Democrats and Labour, this enactment will ensure that all British citizens abroad can remain part of our democracy. The Liberal Democrats were instrumental in reversing the 15-year rule, which Labour instituted in 2001, and the opposition from Labour in the 2010–2015 coalition made it difficult to do so.

Michael Gove, secretary of state for housing, communities, and levelling up, made a comment. “From today, millions of British nationals across the world can exercise their right to vote in future general elections and have their say in the way their country should be governed.” “The Conservatives have once again shown that we are the party for democracy and protecting an individual’s right to vote.” Richard Holden, chairman of the Conservative Party, made a statement. “After years of hard work from Conservatives Abroad and our party members, we have finally seen the biggest expansion of our democratic franchise in almost a century, despite persistent opposition from Labour and Liberal Democrats.” “I look forward to reaching out and connecting with our overseas voters in the months ahead.” Restoring the franchise was spearheaded by Conservatives overseas, whose chairman Heather Harper MBE stated, “Millions of people living abroad, both working and retired, have been prevented from exercising their democratic right to vote.” “This new measure puts Britain back on a par with democracies such as the US, France, Italy and New Zealand in recognizing the importance of their citizens worldwide.”

India versus Afghanistan: Parthiv Patel picks Axar Patel over Ravindra Jadeja for T20WC 2024

0

When asked who he would rather see at the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA in 2024, Parthiv Patel answered Axar Patel instead of Ravindra Jadeja.

The current Twenty20 International series between Afghanistan and India has Axar in superb form. He has taken four wickets in two matches at a 5.1% economy rate, putting him in first place at the moment.

The rapidity with which Axar bowls makes it difficult to stay on top of him, according to Parthiv.

The precision with which he strikes the ball is his greatest asset. For the most part, he avoids bowling in the slot. He can only be attacked with the feet or by clearing space. The rapidity with which he bowls makes it difficult to use your feet, according to what Parthiv said on Jio Cinemas.

For Parthiv, Axar is the epitome of a cricketer “who can perform everywhere” because of his powerplay bowling abilities.

Anywhere he goes, he can put on a show. I believe Axar provides that steadiness in this T20 format, although Ravindra Jadeja is certainly a topic of conversation. The fact that he bowls during powerplays enhances his cricketing abilities, he said.

After scoring four wickets and allowing only seventeen runs in Sunday’s second Twenty20 International at Indore’s Holkar Cricket Stadium, Axar was named the match’s most valuable player. He ensured that India restricted Afghanistan to 172 runs on a fantastic batting surface by taking the wickets of Gulbadin Naib and Ibrahim Zadran.

Parthiv stated that Axar’s power-hitting talent makes him more valuable to the club, even though he hasn’t batted in the series.

“Indeed, certainly, in this format. More variety is brought in by Axar, in my opinion. Bowling is just one aspect of his game. He can hit a variety of spots. Axar is a power batter, which is a must for this Indian squad. From my perspective, Axar is superior to Jadeja in this style,” Parthiv continued.

On January 17, in Bangalore’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, India will play Afghanistan in their third and last Twenty20 International.

The Impact of the Elections Act 2022, UK on Voting Dynamics - The Hard News Daily

An important bill, the Elections Act 2022, was presented to the House of Commons in July 2021 and, after receiving Royal Assent on April 28, 2022, became law. With the passage of this law, the United Kingdom has broken with its long history of voting by making photo identification required for all in-person ballots. The Act also gives the government new powers over the Electoral Commission, an independent elections regulator; this is a sensitive point.

Important Elections Act 2022 Requirements:

The Impact of the Elections Act 2022, UK on Voting Dynamics - The Hard News Daily

The most noticeable amendment to the Elections Act 2022 is the need for picture identification when voting in person in the UK. Since only Northern Ireland had previously required voter identification in the UK, this is a change from the usual. Much discussion and worry has been generated on the possible effects of the Act’s inclusion of this requirement on accessibility and voting turnout.

The Election Commission Under the Government’s Watchful Eye:

The Impact of the Elections Act 2022, UK on Voting Dynamics - The Hard News Daily

Aside from changing voter ID laws, the Elections Act of 2022 gives the government more authority over the Electoral Commission, an independent body that regulates elections. The future autonomy of the commission has been called into question by this decision. Some feel that these modifications could weaken the credibility and objectivity of the organization tasked with monitoring voting procedures.

Consequences for Voter Participation:

The Impact of the Elections Act 2022, UK on Voting Dynamics - The Hard News Daily

A possible 1.1 million fewer voters will cast ballots in the next general election, according to academic studies submitted to the House of Commons. Parliamentary committees, the House of Lords, and devolved administrations are among those who are opposed to the Act on the grounds that it could disenfranchise some populations due to the disproportionate impact of these amendments on those populations who are less likely to have picture ID.

Disagreements and Resistance for Elections Act 2022:

The Impact of the Elections Act 2022, UK on Voting Dynamics - The Hard News Daily

Many people are strongly against the Elections Act of 2022. The possible negative repercussions of the Act have been voiced by critics, who include members of the House of Lords, the Electoral Commission, and devolved governments. The legislation’s already contentious atmosphere has only grown since the House of Lords rejected many amendments, most notably those that would have mitigated the Act’s effect on diversity and inclusion.

Questions and Remarks:

The Impact of the Elections Act 2022, UK on Voting Dynamics - The Hard News Daily

Some people are against the Elections Act of 2022 because they think it will make it harder for some people to vote, especially those who don’t have photo IDs. Lord Wallace, a fellow Liberal Democrat, is among many who have criticized the measure, calling it “shabby and illiberal” and a “nefarious piece of legislation.” The Act has diminished the inclusivity of elections, which could damage the UK’s democratic reputation, according to Professor Toby James, an expert in politics and public policy.

Modifications to Methods of Voting in Elections Act 2022:

The Impact of the Elections Act 2022, UK on Voting Dynamics - The Hard News Daily

Not only does the Act mandate voter IDs, but it also replaces the supplemental vote (SV) system with the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system for elections for the positions of police and crime commissioner and mayor. Those who are against the change say it will help the current Conservative Party win elections in the future, especially in London, even if they don’t have a majority of the vote.

In essence:

The implementation of required picture identification and changes to the voting landscape in the Elections Act 2022 has caused quite a stir. Opponents voice worries about possible disenfranchisement and the weakening of democratic norms, while supporters claim that these improvements strengthen the honesty of the voting process. We will continue to examine and evaluate the long-term effects on voter engagement and the electoral system as the UK adjusts to these revolutionary legislative developments.

India To Include Persian As One Of 9 Classical Languages: S Jaishankar

The high-level talks between India and Iran continue, and S Jaishankar is currently in Iran as a participant.

Tehra:

As part of its New Education Policy, the Indian government has chosen to include Farsi (Persian) as one of nine classical languages, marking a major step toward strengthening cultural connections, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

“The government of India has decided to include Farsi as one of the nine classical languages of India in our New Education Policy,” stated S. Jaishankar, drawing attention to the literary, cultural, and linguistic ties that bind Iran and India.

These were the views made by S Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart, H. Amir-Abdollahian, during a joint press conference on Monday. Jaishankar is now on a two-day visit to Iran.

This acknowledgment demonstrates a dedication to promoting a deeper comprehension and admiration of Farsi’s rich history within the Indian educational system. Classical language designation was bestowed upon Tamil in 2004, making it the first language in India to do so. Additionally, the Indian government has recognized Sanskrit, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia as classical languages.

“In addition to these classical languages Pali, Persian, and Prakrit; and their works of literature too must be preserved for their richness and for the pleasure and enrichment of posterity,” states India’s National Education Policy-2020.

The press conference was a chance for S. Jaishankar and Amir-Abdollahian to discuss the many facets of their bilateral relations, including economic and political ties. “The foreign minister and I specifically focused on its political and economic aspects, but naturally there were other domains as well,” the External Affairs Minister clarified.

Interpersonal relationships, as well as the deep literary, cultural, and linguistic links between the two countries, were acknowledged by the ministers.

Our strengths have always included our people-to-people interactions. The strong literary, cultural, and linguistic links between Iran and India provide a special basis for the two countries to welcome more visitors, students, artists, athletes, and academics. S. Jaishankar made the statement, “We discussed how we can better link our cultural and educational institutions,” while highlighting the possibility of improved collaboration in other domains.

When asked about regional connectivity, S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s desire to use Iran as a gateway to Central Asian, Afghan, and Eurasia markets. For the interest of both parties, the ministers discussed potential avenues for deepening economic ties and improving regional connectivity.

Naturally, today’s conversations centered on regional connectivity, a crucial cornerstone of India-Iran relations. “I want to stress again how interested India is in taking advantage of Iran’s strategic location to reach customers in Central Asia, Afghanistan, and everywhere in between,” he continued.

S. Jaishankar was pleased with the thoroughness of the talks, which he said highlighted the regularity of high-level contacts between the two nations. The fact that high-level contacts between our countries have been ongoing has helped my discussions today. He emphasized that just recently, in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Modi and President Raisi met.

Our top brass has been in constant communication by phone and letter. Over the past several days, I have also kept in touch with Abdollahian on a daily basis. Additionally, he mentioned that our Foreign Office Consultations were held just two months ago. He went on to say that the regularity of these exchanges, along with the guidance given by our leadership, has laid a sound foundation for expanding substantive cooperation in many areas.

While in Iran on Monday, S. Jaishankar met with the minister of roads and urban development to discuss the creation of a “long-term cooperation framework” for the vital marine facility Chabahar Port, which is located on the country’s southeast coast.

The Ministry of External Affairs has announced that Mr. Jaishankar, the Minister of External Affairs, is now in Iran as part of the continuing high-level discussions between the two countries.
