According to sources in the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, the Directorate of Estates has issued an eviction notice to Mahua Moitra, a former TMC MP who was removed from the Lok Sabha last month, over her government property.
As per the report, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader has been directed to promptly leave the bungalow that was assigned to her while she served as a Member of Parliament.
“Following the issuance of the eviction notice on Tuesday, a team from the Directorate of Estates will be sent to ensure swift vacation of the government bungalow,” a source informed THND.
It is important to mention that Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha on December 8 of the previous year. She was previously instructed to leave the property by January 7 after her allotment was canceled.
The Department of Education (DoE) issued a notification on January 8, providing Moitra with a three-day deadline to explain why she had not yet left the government housing. A subsequent notification was issued on January 12.
On January 4, the Delhi High Court recommended that Moitra seek permission from the Department of Education (DoE) to continue living in the government-provided apartment assigned to her. The court recognized that under specific conditions, a resident is permitted to remain over their allotted time for a maximum of six months, with the condition of incurring certain fees.
Justice Subramoniun Prasad clarified that the court has refrained from making any judgments regarding the merits of the case, hence granting Moitra permission to retract her petition. The DoE is anticipated to render an independent decision on her case, while strictly sticking to the eviction procedures outlined by the law.
Moitra was ousted from the Lok Sabha on December 8, 2021, due to accusations of “unethical behavior,” which included taking gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani and disclosing her Parliament internet user ID and password to him.
