Bill Ackman: The Man Behind Pershing Square Capital

0

Investor Bill Ackman backs bid by dissidents for Harvard board seats - BusinessToday

Bill Ackman is well-known in the financial industry for his work managing hedge funds and investing in several other ventures. An activist investor, Ackman was born on May 11, 1966, and is the chief executive officer and founder of the Pershing Square Capital Management hedge fund. Ackman has grown into a prominent—and occasionally divisive—figure in the world of finance over the years.

Background & Schooling:

Bill Ackman’s path to the financial industry started in school. In 1988, he graduated with a BA in history from Harvard College. In 1992, he got an MBA from Harvard Business School. These scholastic endeavors prepared him well for a career in finance.

Ackman established the New York City-based hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management in 2004. An activist investment strategy is used by the fund, which means that it takes big stakes in firms and then works to alter management in a way that Ackman thinks will increase shareholder value.

Notable activist efforts have included Pershing Square, which has gained notoriety for its investments in Chipotle, Herbalife, and Target. While Ackman’s bets have occasionally yielded big profits, they have also drawn criticism from other market participants and investors. This technique has resulted to both wins and controversies.

Problems and Controversies:

Ackman’s short position on Herbalife, a worldwide nutrition corporation, was one of his most glamorized and contentious wagers. Ackman staked a substantial amount of money against Herbalife shares after openly stating his belief that the company was a pyramid scam. This sparked an intense and well reported feud between Ackman and other Herbalife investors.

Bill Ackman Versus Herbalife: What Happened? | StreetFins®

The stock price of Ackman’s investment in Valeant Pharmaceuticals dropped significantly as the company came under fire for its business methods. As a result of these events, Ackman has been the target of both praise and criticism; some have lauded his courage, while others have questioned the safety of his investment ideas.

Beyond his career in finance, Ackman has been active in philanthropy and projects with a social impact. He and his wife, Karen Ackman, agreed to donate most of their wealth to help solve some of society’s biggest challenges when they joined The Giving Pledge. Ackman has demonstrated a dedication to creating a constructive influence beyond the financial sphere by supporting a variety of issues, such as healthcare and education.

Bill Ackman has been a successful investor and risk-taker throughout his career, but his outspoken views and daring wagers have also contributed to his reputation. Among the many influential figures in the world of hedge funds, Ackman stands out as Pershing Square Capital Management’s founder and current chief executive officer. His influence on the financial world, whether positive or negative, is indisputable, and Ackman’s legacy as a philanthropist and investor will surely influence conversations going forward.

Following the university’s reaction to the attacks on Israel on October 7, the $51 billion endowment organization of Harvard University met with wealthy investors in an effort to appease Silicon Valley leaders.

Executives from the nation’s largest educational endowment—Harvard Management Company—met in Northern California with three Silicon Valley firms—Sequoia Capital, Kleiner Perkins, and Andreessen Horowitz—according to a Wall Street Journal story.

They visited with tech-hub companies as well as Elad Gil, an investor of Israeli descent, and Patrick Collison, CEO of payments company Stripe. Stripe has Harvard as an investor.

Following former president Claudine Gay’s congressional testimony, which ignited intense national criticism regarding the Ivy League institution’s stance on antisemitism on campus, both Gil and Collison have been vocal in their opposition to the school.

The presidents of MIT, Harvard, and the University of Pennsylvania gave “shamefully evasive” answers during the congressional hearing on antisemitism on their campuses, which Collison described as “shocked” in a post he made on X on December 6.

During yesterday’s congressional hearing, the presidents of MIT, Harvard, and Penn astonished me by refusing to condemn calls for genocide. According to Collison, who saw a few hours of the hearing, the responses were consistently dishonorably vague and evasive. “As an alum (albeit fleeting) of the first of those institutions, it appears that something is very broken.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, during the discussions, representatives from Harvard University sought to mend fences and reassure investors that free speech and student safety are the university’s top priorities.

“HMC is fortunate to have strong, longstanding relationships with many investment managers who care deeply about higher education,” said Patrick McKiernan, a spokesman for the Harvard Endowment, talked to WSJ. “It is important to engage with our partners and share with them all of the ways that Harvard is actively working to ensure student safety and protect freedom of speech.”

Some supervisors’ worries have been allayed by Gay’s resignation, according to the WSJ.

The university is cognizant of the accusation that its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have gone too far in recent years, according to private-equity businessman Paul Finnegan, who is both the chair of the endowment and a member of the 12-person Harvard Corporation that controls the institution.

With DEI becoming so pervasive on campus, HMC executives acknowledged that some faculty and students may feel pressured to limit themselves.

According to WSJ, the executives stated that Harvard was considering policy changes to allow more academic independence and free speech.

Following Hamas’s historic assault on Israel, pressure mounted on Harvard’s money management.

Donors and investors have cut ties with Harvard because of what they perceived as the school’s inadequate reaction to the attacks and antisemitism during Gay’s tenure.

In a long letter about antisemitism on campus, billionaire Bill Ackman wrote to his alma mater’s previous president and then made it public on social media.

“I am writing this letter to you regretfully,” Ackman tweeted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on November 4th.

The previous president of Harvard, Gay, was criticized by the hedge fund manager for conveying “a clear message that the eliminationism and anti-Semitic statements of the protesters are permissible on campus.”

Sumit Nagal's hard effort comes off: 900 euros in account to enormous Australian Open 2024 payoff. - The Hard News Daily

After winning the Australian Open 2024, the top-ranked men’s singles player from India, Sumit Nagal, reflected on his recent troubles. This young player made history at the Australian Open by defeating a seeded opponent for the first time since 1989.

In a historic match, Nagal advanced to the second round of the Australian Open by crushing 27th-ranked Alexander Bublik. In 1989, at the Australian Open, Ramesh Krishnan beat Mats Wilander before Nagal. In a battle that lasted two hours and forty-eight minutes, Nagal triumphed over Bublik 6-4, 6-2, 7-6, and the Indian team was filled with joy.

In September 2023, the top-ranked tennis player from India shocked everyone by admitting that, after paying all of the bills associated with his sport, he had just Rs 80,000 left in his bank account. Not only did Nagal’s success guarantee a windfall at the office, but it is also likely to bring in more sponsorship opportunities for the athlete.

Last year was Nagal’s finest as an athlete, and he was overjoyed with his growth. At the end of 2023, he was ranked 130th in the world.

Being an athlete will put you through these kinds of situations. An excellent year and a terrible one are both possible. While relying on wild cards and starting the year with barely 900 euros, Nagal finished inside the top 130 last year, making it one of his greatest years, he told the broadcasters.

Despite not being granted a wildcard admission, Nagal persevered through the Australian Open qualifying stages and eventually made it to the main tournament. He qualified for the Australian Open with a three-match winning streak. Nagal has now advanced past the first round of a Grand Slam tournament twice. After beating Bradley Klahn 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at the 2020 US Open, Nagal went on to lose in the second round to Dominic Theim.

The victory over Bublik still hadn’t fully registered with the 26-year-old, he said. Still, he felt a sense of accomplishment at having advanced to the second round.

I mean, I’m not exactly shedding tears over this, but it still hasn’t entirely hit me. Considering my initial situation, I was quite pleased with my ability to earn a second opportunity at this tournament, qualify, and go to the second round. For Nagal, “it’s a good feeling,” he told the press.

On Thursday, January 18, Nagal of India will face Shang Juncheng of China in the following round.

HanuMan surpasses Guntur Kaaram, crosses Rs 100 crore worldwide on day 5..- The Hard News Daily

Daily collections for the legendary superhero flick HanuMan, which is set in Telugu, have surpassed those of Mahesh Babu’s Guntur Kaaram. Despite having a smaller budget, no major stars, and a novice director, HanuMan has skyrocketed on the strength of positive word-of-mouth, opening to approximately a sixth of what Guntur Kaaram grossed on its first day of release.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, HanuMan earned Rs 12.75 crore on its fifth day of release. Weekend earnings were higher than the film’s opening weekend total of Rs 8 crore. The fourth day, Monday, saw earnings of Rs 15 crore, down slightly from Rs 16 crore on Sunday (a fall of 5%). HanuMan is currently sitting at Rs 68 crore in domestic profits, giving it a good chance of crossing the Rs 100 crore mark by either Friday or Saturday.

On the fifth day of its Telugu run, Prashanth Varma’s HanuMan, which stars Teja Sajja, had 68% occupancy. The evening and nighttime performances were the busiest, with 70% occupancy rates. The Hindi version of the film only managed 12% occupancy on day five, indicating that it has not yet successfully crossed over, in contrast to the above 90% occupancy in Hyderabad and Vijayawada. Meanwhile, Guntur Kaaram allegedly made 11 crore rupees on day five in India, bringing its total domestic earnings to 94 crore rupees.

According to trade expert Manobala Vijayabalan, HanuMan has crossed the Rs 100 crore barrier on a global scale. Including Tuesday’s domestic receipts, the film has earned a minimum of Rs 112 crore. According to a Variety article, HanuMan’s domestic distributor is reportedly considering increasing the film’s screen count after the film earned $2.3 million (Rs 19 crore) in its first weekend at the US box office with only 430 screens. Rumor has it that 2025 will see the release of Jai Hanuman, the sequel.

Microsoft launches Copilot Pro AI Assistant for $20/month for consumers, small businesses - The Hard News Daily

In an effort to attract more paying customers, Microsoft is making its AI assistant available to consumers and smaller businesses through its corporate version.

The software giant from Redmond, Washington, announced in a statement that they are offering a $20/month (about Rs. 1,659) consumer edition of Copilot. This version grants access to the newest ChatGPT technology and image-creation features developed by OpenAI. Users with an Office 365 subscription will have access to Copilot, which can assist with data summarization, question answering, and content creation in Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The 30-subscription requirement for the enterprise service will be eliminated by the corporation, which has been offering a comparable product to major enterprises for $30 per user (about Rs. 2,489 per month).

Even though Microsoft has redesigned almost all of its products to revolve around AI capabilities built on OpenAI technology, Office products are still a great opportunity to charge more for AI support. Azure chief Scott Guthrie compared the current demand to the wait times customers experienced nearly 30 years ago when purchasing Windows 95 software, citing unusually high demand as an example.

Starting in March, Microsoft began testing what is now known as Copilot for Microsoft 365, an Office-based copilot. In November, the business started selling it widely to companies who bought 300 subscriptions or more. According to Jared Spataro, a VP at Microsoft, this rendered the service unavailable to smaller organizations and those wishing to start with a more limited trial.

The demand for Copilot from Microsoft 365 is beyond anything they have ever seen in the commercial market, he added. Small and medium-sized enterprises have put pressure on us like we’ve never seen before, demanding to know why they can’t purchase this. “Maybe we should give it a go.”

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will appear at the World Economic Forum in Davos and will be interviewed by Bloomberg after the announcement of the new services.

At the same price point as OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus, Microsoft’s consumer service Copilot Pro offers comparable features; however, according to Spataro, the product’s connectivity with Office is what sets it apart. The business is planning to launch a building tool that will allow individuals to make their own topic-specific Copilots, a service that is already accessible to businesses; this is in line with what OpenAI introduced last year.

The consumer version and the business version of Microsoft’s privacy standards are different. Unlike corporate customer data, Microsoft plans to save some of the consumer model’s cues and replies for model retraining and product improvement.

ABC News cancels Republican debate after Haley choose not to participate without Trump.

Following Nikki Haley’s decision to not participate in the event unless former President Donald Trump consented to be a participant, ABC News stated that the next Republican debate will not be held.

Trump, Haley, and Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, were the only three contenders who were eligible to take part in the debate that ABC hosted.

Haley spoke while campaigning in New Hampshire, saying, “We’ve had five great debates in this campaign.”. Donald Trump has, regrettably, avoided all of them. He is completely exposed. Either Joe Biden or Donald Trump will be my opponent in the upcoming debate. “I can’t wait for it.”

Haley made the remarks after Trump’s decisive victory in the Iowa Caucuses, in which he far outpaced his opponents.

While competing for second place in Iowa, DeSantis and Haley got into a heated exchange, with Haley trying to make her case about Trump more so than DeSantis.

The Associated Press said that DeSantis left Iowa in second place after Haley failed to perform as expected in their previous debate, which may have prompted the former governor of South Carolina to take this action.

“Our intent was to host a debate coming out of the Iowa caucuses, but we always knew that would be contingent on the candidates and the outcome of the race,” stated an ABC News representative.

The fate of CNN’s planned discussion on Sunday is uncertain in light of Haley’s vow to only participate in the event that Trump does as well.

“Nikki Haley is afraid to debate because she doesn’t want to answer the tough questions such as how she got rich off Boeing after giving them millions in taxpayer handouts as governor of South Carolina,” said DeSantis on X. Truthfully, her goal is not the nomination but rather to become Trump’s vice president. I intend to keep my word and will not betray the people of New Hampshire as Donald Trump and Nikki Haley have done. This week in New Hampshire, I’m excited to debate two vacant podiums.

In a two-hour debate last week, Haley squared up against DeSantis. Some caucusgoers found it off-putting that Haley used name-calling and brought up a campaign-run website over a dozen times throughout the discussion.

Margin of Victory in the Iowa Caucus for Trump - The Hard News Daily

Washington, D.C. — Donald Trump’s victory in the Iowa caucuses on Monday surpassed the previous record for Republican presidential contenders, highlighting the widespread support he garnered in the initial stage of the 2024 nominating process.

Trump secured the endorsement of 51% of Iowa caucus attendees, achieving a significant 30-point lead against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who garnered 21% of support and placed in second place. Nikki Haley, the former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, secured a third-place finish with a 19% vote share.

In the history of the modern primary process starting in 1972, the largest margin of victory in a contested GOP campaign in Iowa was achieved by Sen. Bob Dole. He defeated the influential evangelical figure Pat Robertson by a margin of 13 points in the 1988 caucuses. Dole received 37.4% of the votes in the straw poll, while Robertson received 24.6% and George H.W. Bush received 18.6%. Dole withdrew from the contest in March of that year, leading to George H.W. Bush becoming the Republican nominee. Therefore, a decisive win in the Iowa caucuses does not guarantee securing the GOP candidacy. Indeed, the three previous victors of the GOP in Iowa ultimately failed to secure the nomination.

Previous Iowa caucuses have exhibited a high degree of proximity. In 2016, Senator Ted Cruz secured a victory over Trump with a narrow margin of only three points. Trump then emerged victorious in other areas, secured the GOP nominee, and ultimately triumphed in the presidential election. In the 2012 election, Rick Santorum emerged as the winner, defeating Mitt Romney by a narrow margin of only 34 votes out of a total of 121,501 votes cast.

The outcome of Trump’s victory in Iowa on Monday was not unexpected, and neither was the extent of his lead. Pre-election surveys preceding the Iowa caucuses indicated that he was the unequivocal frontrunner poised to secure victory in the initial state. The significant margin by which he won can be attributed to his enhanced popularity among Iowa’s predominantly White, evangelical Republican voters compared to 2016.

Trump continues to be the unequivocal frontrunner among the Republican base on a national scale. According to a recent CBS News/YouGov poll conducted among probable GOP primary voters across the country, 69% expressed their willingness to back Trump if the election were to take place presently, in contrast to 14% for DeSantis and 12% for Haley. The level of support for Trump among potential GOP primary voters around the country has increased in recent months.

Since its founding in 1954, the Filmfare Awards have grown to be a well-known occasion that honours achievement in both artistic and technical facets of the Hindi-language film industry in India. These honors, which were first presented by The Times Group’s Filmfare magazine, are regarded as some of the most important in the Indian cinema industry and are comparable to the well-known Academy honors.

The awards ceremony, which was designed to resemble the Academy Awards, was originally known as the “Clare Awards” or “The Clares” in honor of Clare Mendonça, the editor of The Times of India.

The Filmfare Awards include two voting methods, which is different from the National Film Awards, which have a commission chosen by the government that makes the decisions. This novel method includes public voting in addition to a panel of business professionals.

The Filmfare Awards ceremony has changed a few times since it first started. The live television broadcast of the ceremony was a regular practice in the 1990s but was discontinued for unclear reasons. A week or two following the live event, an edited and pre-recorded version of the awards presentation was aired on SET starting in 2001. The ceremony relocated to Colors on television in 2018.

The 65th Filmfare Awards were held in Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati in 2020, defying the tradition of the ceremony taking place in Mumbai until 2023. The Filmfare Awards were the most important ceremony in Bollywood in the past, but during the 2000s, fewer people have watched them because of the introduction of multiple other awards in Mumbai.

Variant prizes for different Indian film industries have been presented by Filmfare, expanding its significance beyond Hindi cinema. These include the following: the Filmfare OTT Awards for over-the-top films; the Filmfare Short Film Awards for short films; the Filmfare Style & Glamour Awards; the Filmfare Awards East for Bengali, Assamese, and Odia cinema; and the Filmfare Awards Punjabi for Punjabi cinema. According to officials, 4 kg of stolen gold valued at Rs 2.58 crore was found. (Representational)

Mumbai:

Two passengers from Jeddah were intercepted by personnel of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai Zonal Unit on Tuesday upon arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, based on specific intelligence acquired.

In an official release, DRI announced that during the search, they seized 1 kg of gold dust in wax form from each passenger. The substance had been specially stitched into their undergarments.

Additionally, investigators noticed that the three mixer grinders carried by the individuals apprehended weighed more than normal, so they checked them during the luggage inspection. Upon opening the component, approximately 2 kg of gold was discovered within. As a result, 4 kg of illegally imported gold, valued at 2.58 crore rupees, were retrieved.

Afterwards, it was discovered that two individuals were approaching the airport to collect the gold from the travelers.

The cops accordingly set up a trap and caught the targets in the act. These individuals confessed to their crime. Arrest warrants have been issued for the two passengers and both receivers in accordance with the applicable sections of the Customs Act 1962.

This operation is a direct result of DRI’s determination to bring down the growing gold smuggling syndicates.
